Professor Sonaiya is the presidential candidate for the KOWA party – a grouping of activists,
professionals and technocrats who say that corruption and bribes are much in Nigerian politics.
“If you are
distributing leaflets or trying to engage with the people, they ask you
up front: ‘Where is the money you have brought for us?’” Sonaiya says.
Her
party is working for change, and Sonaiya says she believes that Nigeria
is at a crossroads – with quality of life at its lowest point and
unemployment at record highs.
But she faces tough political
opposition, with Nigeria’s election expected to be closely fought
between the two main party candidates: incumbent President Goodluck
Jonathan and former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari.
