Reports have it that Nigeria is paying soldiers from Chad and Niger N146.25m monthly to fight Boko Haram terrorists.
The funds are meant for use as pocket money and feeding allowances for the soldiers from the neighboring countries.
According to Punch, Chad’s 2500 deployed soldiers get N112.5m monthly while the 750 soldiers from Niger get N33.75m.
The funds stated above is different from other funds used for fueling the operational vechicles of the foreign troops and other logistics.
A source told Punch that “Although, it is a joint operation, a kind of sub-regional collaborative effort, Nigeria is the only country funding the operations. The arrangement is not such that each participating country funds its defence forces deployed for the operation,”
The source also said “Nigeria is funding the operation to the extent of providing the allowances for all the Chadian and Nigerien troops involved. Apart from that, the country is also providing for the feeding of these troops and fueling all their operational vehicles,”
According to earlier reports, Nigeria had also employed the services of foreign mercenaries from South Africa and Ukraine to fight the terrorists at the cost of $400 per day.
