With only one attempt on goal, a defense line missing key players, conceding two in quick succession and a glaring show of lack of concentration, here’s five reasons why Madrid fell out against Atletico Madrid:
They Defended Terribly!
First, it was a centre-back pairing of Varane and Nacho…against Atletico Madrid? They showed them why Pepe and Ramos should have played instead. Atletico Madrid ran them ragged, slipped in pass after pass behind the defense line and were too strong for Real Madrid. Griezmann’s goal was a testament to the gapping hole in Madrid’s defense.
They Made More Incomplete Passes Than Complete Ones
Isco seemed to be switched off, Khedira was lost for most part of the game and Kroos had too much on his plate to think of accurate passes. Every time Madrid had the ball, they wanted to play fast football against a team that was better than they were. End result? They always gifted possession away and put themselves under pressure the whole time.
They Were Second-Best From the First to the Last Minute
They looked like they needed an extra player or two to handle Atletico Madrid. They struggled. Every A. Madrid player was twice better than every Real Madrid player on the pitch. Their passes were more accurate than their opponents’. They were more alive than their opponents and in the end, they scored goals and their opponents couldn’t.
They Didn’t Play as a Team
Each time Ronaldo got the ball, he was preoccupied with trying to show off his skills. The same with Bale. Kroos was in another world. Varane and Nach needed Jesus. Casillas didn’t know what was going on. Khedira was in No Man’s Land. Benzema? He had Madrid’s only shot on target and that was it! They were DISCONNECTED!
They Still Don’t Know How to Beat Atletico
Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid have always struggled against Atleti this season. The jinx continued in this game. The tides have turned and Atletico are now the ones enjoying derby success. They (Atleti) know how to frustrate Real Madrid and force them to play their own way. Real, on the other hand, have made their local rivals their Achilles heel.
