Nicki Minaj covers the new issue of Complex, in advance of The Pinkprint coming out in December. This is Nicki, so of course the interview is filled with a lifetime’s worth of good pull quotes.
Should this music career thing stop panning out, she could probably make a decent living as a motivational speaker. But anyway, on to Nicki and her words of wisdom. She said that her delightfully lewd hit “Anaconda” came about because she wanted to do a “playful” song that “embraced curvy women.”
“That whole song, I was just being dumb,” she continued.
“It was a joke.” Nicki also explained the song’s provocative, much-parodied cover art.
She said that she had avoided taking such overtly sexy photos for the past several years, but that she decided to OK this one because she finally felt like it wouldn’t diminish people’s respect for her.
“The reason why I stopped taking pictures like that was because I needed to prove myself,” she said.
“I needed for people to take me seriously. I needed for people to respect my craft. I’ve proven that I’m an MC. I’m a writer; I’m the real deal, so if I want to take sexy pictures, I can.”
Hear, hear! And even after all that, she still had more to say about at the “Anaconda” video and how she responds to haters who think it’s too hot for TV. When the writer asks her what she has to say to the dad who wrote an open letter to her about the clip, Nicki’s response is perfect.
“Shut your stupid ass up. Bye, dad,” she said. “I laughed at it.” So now you know what Nicki does when you give her unsolicited advice about how she should live her life. She laughs, literally all the way to the bank, where she eventually plans to put $500 million. The whole interview is worth a read, and not just because she describes Drake as a “dope actor” (though that certainly is a point of interest).
One upside to the delayed release of The Pinkprint? This glorious, extended round of Nicki Minaj interviews.
