The Queen while writing her first tweet at the Science Museum yesterday
The Queen naturally has the right to be fashionably late to the party but some may be surprised that it has taken her five years to hop on board the Twitter bandwagon, with the Monarch posting her first ever tweet today in front of an audience in London, making royal history.
The 88-year-old was in attendance at the Science Museum this morning where she officially opened the brand new Information Age Galleries, so it only made sense that she would mark the occasion by joining the Twitter land in front of her audience of 600 guests. Gracefully removing her glove, the Queen then began tapping on the screen before clicking “tweet” on the message that read: “It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R.” Oh, doesn’t it sound regal already!
So far, the tweet has been retweeted more than 1,900 times and has received more than 1,200 favourites. Impressive! The @BritishMonarchy account is usually run by the Queen’s team of staff, and just to make sure followers were clear it wasn’t a joke, they clarified soon after Her Majesty’s post: “The last tweet was sent personally by The Queen from her official Twitter account @BritishMonarchy #TheQueenTweets.”
The Queen isn’t the first royal to join Twitter, as Prince Harry once used the social networking site, but he admitted earlier this year that he no longer has an account, while The Duke of York often uses his own account, which he often signs off with “AY” – Andrew York – so followers know it was a legit tweet. Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, have their Twitter affairs managed by Clarence House.
Since the Queen sent her first tweet, Twitter has exploded with excitement as her account now has more than 756,000 followers, after seeing a boost in just 45 minutes from around 722,000 followers. She now rules Twitter!
